About Us

Harleston Greenspace CIC is a new community group established to promote nature recovery and provide public amenity greenspace to encourage engagement with nature and a healthy lifestyle.

The group was set up by three local people interested in the environment who spotted an opportunity to create a nature conservation site in Harleston.  This is an example of local people taking direct action as envisaged in the Nature Recovery in Harleston initiative and promoted by the Our Nature Recovery collective.

The Site

The land is listed in the Neighbourhood Plan as both a ‘green gateway' which should be maintained as a soft entrance to the town ; and a 'local green space' to be afforded the same protection as a green belt.

It is owned by South Norfolk Council. Harleston Greenspace CIC obtained an agreement to manage the site for nature, and planning permission for change of use from farmland.

Funding

Harleston Greenspace CIC were awarded £10,000 from the South Norfolk Council's 'Nature Conservation Fund' to create a nature conservation area on the land.

The focus of funding was on: projects that actively contribute to tackling carbon emissions; enhance local ecosystems by supporting a diverse range of plant and animal life; and create and improve green spaces that are accessible and enjoyable for the community.

Whether as developers, farmers, businesses, organisations or as individuals, this is down to us.

As the initiative develops everyone will be invited to join in with activities, and to play a part in this vital task for the wellbeing of the natural world.
