Grapevine Article - August

There was a steady flow of visitors to the meadow during our bioblitz day in June, many of which were visiting for the first time. People were very positive and wanted to learn more about wildlife and what we are doing at the site. It was also encouraging to see enthusiastic youngsters who just wanted to learn more. We recorded 149 species of birds, plants, insects, and animals on the meadow during the day. This is an amazing start for our records. We will soon publish a catalogue of what we found and make it available for people to submit their own observations.
A big thank you to Ben Greif from the Forestry Commission, and project manager of the Dove Meadow in Dickleburgh, for brush cutting the brambles and thistles which were encroaching on our Miyawaki forest. Without intervention they would have invaded and strangled our trees. The next task is to remove those that have managed to get into the mini forest.
Thanks also to Dan and Elliot from D Meadows Tree Surgery who put up bird and bat boxes around the site. There are three bird versions: blue tit; sparrow; and starling. There is a special one which was won by Pete Stott in our fundraising event last year. We now have lots of new homes ready for occupation and look forwards to welcoming our new residents.
As our meadow is now taking shape there are regular tasks in keeping it looking good. We would like to build a team of ‘Strimmers’ to help control the weeds and brambles around the mini forest. Do you have a battery strimmer? Could you spare an hour a month to take part? Maybe we can pop to the pub for refreshments afterwards?
