Grapevine Article - October
The weather has recently been kinder, and the ground is becoming easier to manage. We plan to carry out more weeding to the Miyawaki forest to better control the intrusive Russian vine.
We have been busy promoting the Meadow and engaging with the local community through a variety of events and activities. On August Bank Holiday Monday, we attended the Harleston and Waveney Festival with an information display about the Meadow. It was wonderful to meet so many people, share news about the project, and chat with visitors throughout the day.
A popular activity at the festival was making mini bug houses from recycled tin cans. Our young visitors enjoyed taking part, and it was rewarding to see so much enthusiasm for supporting local wildlife. We hope the bug houses will soon be attracting a variety of insect visitors and helping to create new habitats in gardens across the area.
As part of the volunteer day on 7 September, Waveney Volunteers for Nature held a scything demonstration. We welcomed seven new volunteers, including some local actors learning the skill in preparation for their Heritage Open Days production, ‘Reapers’ Year’.
The next volunteer day will be on 3 November from 10am until 2pm. We also need help with assorted tasks before then, so if you can spare a couple of hours we would love to see you. We are a friendly bunch, if you are interested in helping and to get more details, please email us at: contact@harlestongreenspace.co.uk
