Last month, we held a seminar at the Masonic Rooms to officially launch the project. An enthusiastic full house heard about our vision and more generally what is being done for the environment across our district and parliamentary constituency.
A special thanks to all our guest speakers including: Adrian Ramsay, MP for the Waveney Valley; Cllr Daniel Elmer, Leader of South Norfolk Council; Mark Webster from The Conservation Volunteers (TCV); Christine Douglas from Waveney Volunteers for Nature (WVfN); and the Harleston branch of the Freemasons for proving the Masonic Rooms as the venue.
The ‘what 3 words’ (w3w) Miyawaki forest sponsorship package was particularly popular. For £100 someone can sponsor a ww3w square in the new mini forest. They will be invited to plant the last tree in their square and have a photo as a memory of the occasion. They will also receive a signed certificate of sponsorship under company seal, be listed for their kindness on our website, and get an annual update on their trees. There are only 25 squares in the forest, most have now been reserved, but a few remain. If you would like to help our project with sponsorship, please get in touch.
This month will see the real work begin. In early December TCV will carry out groundworks, install fencing, sow wildflower seeds, and plant trees in the Miyawaki forest. The first big volunteer day is 29 December from 10am until 2pm with a stop for lunch. WVfN will be cutting and clearing hay meadows. All tools are supplied but please wear suitable clothing and footwear. More details can be found at: https://tinyurl.com/hg-volunteers. If you would like to join the volunteers please get in touch, we would love to build up a local team.
There are many other ways to get involved including: recording the bird, insect and plant species; raising money with coffee mornings, or running stalls; and helping with administration. Help can range from clearing the land to folding leaflets. We welcome and appreciate all offers.
