Our big reveal is that the nature conservation field has been named Magpies Meadow in recognition of an historic use as the home ground to Harleston Magpies Hockey Club. We would like to thank the Hockey Club for sponsoring two w3w squares in the new mini forest, and we are very pleased to announce that all 24 available squares were snapped up by generous sponsors. A full list can be found at: www.harlestongreenspace.co.uk/miyawaki-sponsors
It has been a busy month. We held a social evening at The Swan Hotel to raise money and thank our sponsors. The Ladies Tangent presented us with their cheque for £100. County Cllr Martin Wilby who donated £2,000 from his members grant fund, drew lottery balls, and there were a fun quiz and a raffle all based around nature. The main prize being a bird box to be installed on a new Avian Avenue at Magpies Meadow. If you didn’t make it to the evening, here is one of the questions: what is the name given to a young hedgehog? The answer will be revealed next month.
There have been bird box building sessions for families at Harleston Library. We now have boxes for different types of birds installed on Avian Avenue at the edge of the meadow. Thank you to everyone who came along and joined in and to the people who prepared the building kits.
Officers from South Norfolk Council are visiting all sites which received a grant from the Nature Conservation Fund. They came to Harleston on 11 February and were very complimentary about our work and achievements to date. Many of our ideas could be useful for other projects.
We have plans for more events, these include an introduction to wildlife recording workshop, and a dawn to dusk day, where there will be the chance to learn more about the site and the wildlife that calls it home.
