Grapevine Article - April
We continue our work in the cold and mud, further tidying the brambles. But the main thing you will notice is a wider bridge for improved access and a kissing gate to control access. This was part of the agreement we have with South Norfolk Council. We will soon create a gradient to the approach to the bridge on the land we manage, and we will discuss what can be achieved on the land managed by South Norfolk Council. There remain other things to do such as to cut the circu

Grapevine Article - March
Our big reveal is that the nature conservation field has been named Magpies Meadow in recognition of an historic use as the home ground to Harleston Magpies Hockey Club. We would like to thank the Hockey Club for sponsoring two w3w squares in the new mini forest, and we are very pleased to announce that all 24 available squares were snapped up by generous sponsors. A full list can be found at: www.harlestongreenspace.co.uk/miyawaki-sponsors It has been a busy month. We hel

Fundraising Evening
There was a fun social evening in The Swan Hotel on Thursday to allocate the w3w squares to our Miyawaki forest sponsors. A big reveal was that the conservation area will now be called 'Magpies Meadow' in recognition of it being a previous home to the Harleston Magpies Hockey Club. We were honoured to welcome Pat, who remembers playing hockey on the meadow. The Magpies Hockey Club at the Meadow, that one deserves a special photo when the weather is better. County Councillor

Grapevine Article - February
Enthusiastic volunteers continue with groundwork. The Waveney Volunteers for Nature (WVfN) tackled a formidable area of well-established bramble and Russian vine as well as removing a considerable amount of dumped rubbish. Thanks to The Conservation Volunteers, most of the trees have been planted in the Miyawaki forest, and all that remains are the trees which will be planted by the sponsors. February is going to be a busy volunteer and fundraising month. Thursday 19 February

Digging Deep
The Conservation Volunteers have been on site with the heavy equipment. The Miyawaki forest is taking shape. A digger was used to dig the area to a depth of 1.4m and turn it over. Most of the trees have been planted with mycorrhizal fungi added to enrich the soil and woodchip as a mulch. A fence has been installed to protect against deer and rabbits and we will mark out the w3w squares. The final trees will be planted by our kind sponsors in their w3w square, in the new y

The Next Volunteer Day
Last month the real work started. The Waveney Volunteers for Nature (WVfN) held a day to clear some of the grass for the hay meadows. While it was quite chilly, it was a great way to exercise in the open air. Later The Conservation Volunteers carried out the heavy work. A digger was used to dig the area for the Miyawaki forest to a depth of 1.4m and turn it over. Mycorrhizal fungi will be added when planting and the area covered with woodchip as a mulch. The next WVfN volu

Last month, we held a seminar at the Masonic Rooms to officially launch the project. An enthusiastic full house heard about our vision and more generally what is being done for the environment across our district and parliamentary constituency. A special thanks to all our guest speakers including: Adrian Ramsay, MP for the Waveney Valley; Cllr Daniel Elmer, Leader of South Norfolk Council; Mark Webster from The Conservation Volunteers (TCV); Christine Douglas from Waveney Vol

The Work has Started
It has taken a long time to get to this point, but we are very pleased to say that work has now started on the field to create a nature conservation site. Local people joined the Waveney Volunteers for Nature on a crisp Saturday morning for the first round of cutting the grasses for the hay meadows. It is hard work but very satisfying and a good way to exercise and enjoy the open air while helping nature to recover. We spotted our first vole. So that is another one for the b
